FG Wants Death Sentence For Nnamdi Kanu After His Conviction

The Federal Government has asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to sentence Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to death after he was found guilty of terrorism.

Justice James Omotosho ruled that the government proved all seven charges against Kanu beyond reasonable doubt, meaning the evidence was strong enough to convict him.

Right after the conviction, the government’s lead lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), told the court that the law requires a death sentence for several of the offences Kanu was convicted of under the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013.

Awomolo said the judge had no other option but to give the death penalty for counts one, two, four, five, and six because the law clearly states it.

He said, “My Lord, the punishment for these offences is death. The court has no discretion. The law empowers you to impose the death sentence, and we expect you to do so.”

After hearing both sides, the judge took a short break and announced that the court would return at 3:50 p.m. to give the final sentence.
