Buhari passed away after battling an illness.

The statement read: “Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un. The family of the former president announces the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari today in a hospital in London.

“May Allah have mercy on him, forgive him, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus (the highest paradise). Ameen.”

Last week, Garba Shehu had said that Buhari was seriously ill, but was beginning to recover.

Buhari died at the age of 83. He is survived by one wife, children, and grandchildren.

His illness had sparked public debate, with one of his former aides, Bashir Ahmad, insisting that the illness was not serious.

People across the country have already started expressing their condolences.

Buhari ruled Nigeria twice in history first as a military leader and later as a democratically elected president.

He was in office from 2015 to 2023, after which President Tinubu succeeded him under the APC political party.
