The Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending weeks of speculation about his political future.
The governor’s spokesperson, Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the development in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

But Governor Diri did not leave the PDP alone — 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly also resigned from the party and followed him.
Alabrah wrote: “Governor Douye Diri has left the PDP along with 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.”
This move is one of the biggest political changes in the state’s history and has raised questions about the future of the PDP, which has ruled Bayelsa since 1999.
Although the reason for their defection was not stated, political observers believe it may be linked to internal crises within the PDP. There is also speculation that Governor Diri and his team may be planning to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, many residents of the state have started reacting to the news as they await the governor’s next step.
