Lawyers Urge Caution in Nigeria’s Dealings with the U.S.

Two Nigerian lawyers have urged the Federal Government to handle its relationship with the United States with caution, describing America’s recent comments and policies toward Nigeria as “misleading and self-serving.”

Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, a lawyer and former presidential aide, accused the U.S. of using “deceptive diplomacy” to divide Nigeria under the excuse of protecting Christians. He said the claim of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria is false and intended to cause instability.

“Nigeria has never posed a threat to global peace,” Obono-Obla said. “If America, where shootings happen regularly in churches, has not invited foreign forces to intervene, it should also allow Nigeria to handle its own challenges.”

He warned that any U.S. military interference would violate international law and Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Barrister Leonard Anyogo, Notary Public and chairman of Good Governance Advocacy International, advised that Nigeria’s response to Washington should be diplomatic, not aggressive.

“We must engage, not confront,” Anyogo said. “Nigeria should seek cooperation in security and diplomacy to protect its interests.”

Both lawyers said Nigeria’s best defense against foreign pressure lies in good governance, unity, and proactive diplomacy based on mutual respect rather than submission.
