Nigerian Army Wants Closer Work With the Media

The Nigerian Army has called for stronger cooperation with the media to ensure accurate and timely reports on national security.

The Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, said this during a visit to the Abuja office of the Nigerian Tribune Newspaper on Thursday. She was accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Unuakhalu and Major Audu Arigu.

Anele praised the Tribune for its long-standing role in journalism and national development. She described the paper as professional and respectful in its coverage of military activities.

She said: “I am here to seek collaboration. I appreciate the good work you are doing for the Nigerian Army and the Armed Forces. My doors are open, and I will do my best to provide information you need for balanced reporting.”

In response, Prince Jacob Segun Olatunji, Acting Abuja Bureau Chief of the Nigerian Tribune, highlighted the paper’s history as Nigeria’s oldest surviving national daily, founded in 1949. He commended the military for protecting the country, especially under the leadership of General Christopher Musa (Chief of Defence Staff) and Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede (Chief of Army Staff).

Olatunji also appealed to the military to keep prioritizing soldiers’ welfare. He noted that things have improved since General Oluyede became Army Chief, and urged him to continue in that direction.

The visit shows the Army’s commitment to building a better relationship with the media for fair and balanced coverage of security issues.
