Comrade Grace Ike, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Correspondents Chapel, has spoken out about the dangers journalists face while doing their jobs.
Speaking on a radio program to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, she listed the many challenges journalists face — including violence, harassment, intimidation, unlawful arrest, online abuse, physical assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination. She said these threats seriously harm press freedom in Nigeria.

Comrade Ike made it clear that the NUJ FCT does not tolerate any form of intimidation or harassment of journalists. She criticized some government officials and security agencies for using excessive force against journalists and demanded that such acts must stop immediately.
“We want those responsible to be held accountable and to issue a public apology,” she said, adding that the union will continue to defend journalists, especially women, and take strong action against intimidation.
She described journalists as “the watchdogs of society,” whose work helps ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
Comrade Ike also recalled the NUJ FCT Press Week held in July 2025, where the importance of protecting press freedom was strongly emphasized.
She concluded that the NUJ FCT will keep fighting for a safe environment where journalists can work freely — without fear, harassment, or violence — and where justice is served for crimes committed against them.
