The symposium is being organized by the NUJ FCT Committee on Disability to promote disability-inclusive reporting and highlight the role of the media in breaking stereotypes and supporting the voices of persons with disabilities in Nigeria’s democratic and development process.
One of the major highlights will be the launch of the Reserved Park Signage Initiative for the National Assembly and media organizations.
The initiative aligns with the Disability (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which promotes accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities in public institutions.
The event will also feature technical sessions on disability rights, media advocacy, and social protection, with experts from CARE, CISLAC, and Heirs Life Assurance leading the discussions.
In addition, journalists with disabilities will share their personal experiences during an interactive session, reflecting the union’s commitment to building a more inclusive media space where every voice is valued.
According to Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, the symposium aims to strengthen media advocacy for disability rights and encourage journalists to promote fairness, inclusion, and equal opportunities in their reporting.
