The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of its members, Mr. Sunday Olatuyi, who was knocked down by a vehicle at the Lugbe Bus Stop, Abuja.

In a statement issued on December 21, 2025, the union said Olatuyi died after he was hit by a Toyota Corolla with registration number ABUJA RBC 128 AM on Saturday night, December 20, 2025, while returning home from work. He was said to be in the company of a friend when the incident happened.

The NUJ described the death as shocking and painful, noting that the driver was allegedly reckless at the time of the accident.

Olatuyi, who was 40 years old, hailed from Odo-Oro Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State. He is survived by his wife, a seven-month-old daughter, Eniola, and his aged mother.

Until his death, he worked as a Senior Cameraman with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN Television) and had previously worked with Ben TV.

The NUJ FCT Council described the late Olatuyi as a committed journalist and union man whose dedication to his profession and active involvement in union activities would be greatly missed.

The union condemned the circumstances surrounding his death and raised concern over the increasing cases of reckless driving and disregard for human lives on roads within the FCT.

It called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and ensure that the driver involved is promptly prosecuted in line with the law.

According to the NUJ, justice must be served not only for the deceased but also to deter other reckless drivers.

The council also extended its condolences to Olatuyi’s family, the management and staff of ADBN Television, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the Society of Practicing Cameramen, as well as his friends and colleagues.

The statement, signed by Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, assured the bereaved family of the union’s support and pledged to continue following up on the case until justice is done.

The union prayed for the repose of his soul.
