Resident Doctors Give Government 24 Hours Before Strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has given the Federal Government 24 hours to act on their demands.

If the government does not respond, the doctors plan to start a nationwide strike.

Earlier, NARD had given a 10-day warning to the government, saying they would go on strike if their issues were not resolved.

Currently, resident doctors in Abuja and Oyo State are already on strike.

Resident doctors work in teaching and specialist hospitals and make up most of the medical workforce there.

They often strike because of unpaid salaries, poor working conditions, and lack of welfare benefits.

Their current demands include:

  • Payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF)
  • Settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35% salary review
  • Payment of 2024 allowance arrears
  • Prompt release of specialist allowances
  • Recognition of West African postgraduate membership certificates
  • Issuance of certificates to deserving candidates by the National Postgraduate Medical College
  • Resolution of welfare issues in Kaduna State and at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso

Dr. Tope Osundara, NARD President, said the decision came after a six-hour virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Council.

He added that the government had promised to act on their concerns but must do so immediately.

He said, “If nothing is done by the end of today, we will start the strike tomorrow. The government should quickly address our demands.”
