Students Give ASUU and Federal Government 7 Days to End Their Dispute

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has given the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) a seven-day deadline to resolve their ongoing disagreement.

NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, made this known in a statement released on Wednesday.

He expressed concern over the growing tension between ASUU and the government, warning that Nigerian students would not accept any disruption of academic activities because of another strike.

Oladoja noted that under President Bola Tinubu’s government, universities have enjoyed two years of uninterrupted academic sessions — something that has not happened since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. However, he said ASUU’s current threat to go on strike could put that progress at risk.

The NANS president praised some of President Tinubu’s education policies, including the creation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the removal of university staff unions from the IPPIS platform, and the end of the policy that required 40% of university revenues to be sent to the federal government. He also commended special support from TETFund.

However, Oladoja expressed worry that delays in implementing the agreements reached between the government and ASUU were worsening the situation.

He appealed to President Tinubu to personally intervene to end the crisis, warning that further delay could damage the progress made in the education sector.
