Top Officials Celebrate NUJ FCT Chair Grace Ike’s One Year in Office, Launch Secretariat Remodelling

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council on Thursday hosted several important personalities as the Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, marked her first year in office.

The event also featured the groundbreaking ceremony for the remodeling of the NUJ Secretariat in Abuja.

Among those present were the Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Akin Rotimi Jr., Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Hon. Bamidele Salam, Managing Director of Arise News, Mr. Bayo Awosemo, FCDA Director of Public Buildings, Arc. Bature Garba, and senior editors from various media houses.

In her speech, Grace Ike reflected on her historic election as the first female chairman of the NUJ FCT Council. She said her administration has focused on unity, professionalism, and rebuilding trust in the union.

She highlighted achievements in training journalists, establishing press clubs in schools, and improving members’ welfare through medical outreach and support programs.

She also celebrated the return of sports activities, saying they have helped strengthen fellowship among members.

On the new building project, Ike said the remodeled Secretariat will create a better working environment for journalists. She promised that the next year of her leadership would bring even more progress.

Hon. Akin Rotimi praised Ike as a strong leader and a good ambassador of journalists at the National Assembly.

He acknowledged the difficult job journalists do and promised continued support from the legislature. He also pledged personal support for the new building project.

Hon. Bamidele Salam also commended Ike for her integrity and dedication. He described her first year in office as transformative and encouraged the NUJ to stay focused on excellence.

He also promised to mobilize more support for the union’s projects.

Arc. Bature Garba of the FCDA reaffirmed the agency’s long-standing partnership with the NUJ. He noted that accurate reporting is essential for Abuja’s development and promised technical support for the Secretariat remodeling.

He applauded the NUJ’s role in informing the public about ongoing reforms in the FCT.

Other dignitaries, including editors and media managers, also pledged support for the growth of journalism in the FCT.

A key moment of the event was the unveiling of a new book titled “The Power of Her Voice” written by Benjamin Ubiri.
