The United States Department of State has canceled visas for over 80,000 people, including Nigerians and citizens of other countries.
The department said the move follows former President Donald Trump’s promise to protect American interests and security, calling it “promises made, promises kept.”

The visa cancellations were due to offenses such as assault, theft, and driving under the influence. In 2024, records showed 16,000 people were penalized for drunk driving, 12,000 for assault, and 8,000 for theft.
Other reasons included connections to terrorism, support for extremist groups, public safety concerns, and overstaying visa terms.
“This action is meant to ensure the safety and security of the United States by holding individuals accountable for serious offenses,” the department said in a statement.
“We continue to monitor and enforce visa rules strictly, in line with U.S. law and security priorities,” it added.
